The ministry of Environment in Peru has been executing with support from UNEP and UNITAR, the project named: “Monitoring, Report, Dissemination and Information on POPs using Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs)”, aiming at designing their own PRTR system.

In this regards, there has been participation from multiple stakeholders such as the ministries, municipalities, industrial associations, civil society associations and universities; in order to create a PRTR that is responsive to the needs of Peru and allows authorities and communities to have enough available information for the decision-making process.

As a result, meetings and trainings have been organized with industrial associations, mainly with companies from the ferrous and non-ferrous industrial production foundries and the fishing sector, particularly on fish flour. During these activities, the mentioned sector-specific companies acquired knowledge on the different methodologies to obtain emissions data for reporting to the pollutant release inventory. During the meetings, the different representatives have manifested interest in demonstrating to the public the activities they have been performing accordingly to environmental laws.

Likewise, besides the technical work, there have been activities with the community to inform them about PRTRs and the work that the Ministry of Environment has been doing as a response to the interest on these type of activities, not only by the community leaders, but also by students and NGO’s.
