The 13th edition of the Taking Stock report was released by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) in April 2011. The current report compiles and presents data for 2006 from PRTRs in Canada, Mexico and the United States, tracking data on pollutants released by facilities to air, water, land, or injected underground, as well as pollutants transferred for recycling, treatment or disposal. This report has a special feature on pollutant releases to surface waters and makes an analysis of the more than 228 million kilograms of pollutant releases reported to surface waters across the three countries. In addition to the direct releases to surface waters, over 133 million kilograms of a wide variety of pollutants were transferred to sewage or wastewater treatment facilities. Depending on their treatment, these pollutants can also be eventually released to surface waters. In this context, two case studies examine pollutant releases to the transboundary rivers of Columbia and the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. The CEC offers the Taking Stock Online website, http://www.cec.org/takingstock, which offers data searching and mapping capabilities to explore different aspects of the reported data. This year the use of a watershed map layer can be used online to have a view of the pollution sources in some river systems.
